Zhangjiajie’s towering sandstone pillars inspired the floating mountains of Avatar — and the real thing is even more dramatic.

Highlights

  • Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — the Avatar pillars
  • Tianmen Mountain — cable car, glass walkway, heaven’s gate
  • Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge — the world’s longest
  • Yuanjiajie — the “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain”
  • Bailong Elevator — 326 m glass elevator in the cliff

Getting Around

The park is huge — plan 2-3 days. Use the park’s shuttle buses between scenic areas. Tianmen Mountain is a separate ticket from the forest park. High-speed rail connects Zhangjiajie to Changsha and Guangzhou.

Where to Stay

  • Wulingyuan — the gateway town to the forest park
  • Zhangjiajie city — near the station and Tianmen
  • In-park guesthouses — for sunrise views

Food

Hunan food is famously spicy — try sanxiaguo (three-in-one pot) and tujia bacon. Ask for “not spicy” if you’re sensitive.
